When might I need a solicitor?

It’s likely that at some point in your life, you’ll need to enlist the help of a solicitor. That’s not to say that you’re destined to divorce your other half, or will fall out with your business partner though, as there are many different situations in which legal advice is necessary. However, it can be hard to tell if your situation is one that could benefit from the help of a solicitor. As such, here are some of the most common situations that require legal intervention…

Creating a will
Death is something most people would rather avoid talking about or planning for but really, it’s one of the worst things to ignore. imagine unexpectedly passing away and leaving your family stuck not knowing what you wanted to do with your possessions, or how you wanted your funeral to be? These are challenges they could do without at a time when they’re grieving for a loved one, so it’s important to get a will set up; taking the stress away from them. Wherever you live – Glasgow, Cardiff or Kingston – solicitors are readily available and can help with this task, so do take care of it sooner rather than later.

Discrimination at work
Despite all of the anti-discrimination laws in power, unfortunately, in some workplaces it still takes place. Discrimination can take place on the grounds of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation, disability and many other things. The chances of going through this are slim, but are there nonetheless and if you find yourself being discriminated against on unreasonable grounds, seeking legal advice is recommended. Solicitors can help you determine firstly if you have a strong case and secondly, help you gather the evidence you need to back up your accusation.

Child custody battles
Often, when parents decide to divorce, they talk about not getting solicitors or legal aids involved – citing their child’s wellbeing. However, things can get so acrimonious between two people who have grown apart that getting a solicitor involved can actually protect a child’s wellbeing. Having the details of your custody schedule worked out by a neutral party could keep any arguing or bickering away from your child and behind closed doors. This would prevent them feeling sad, angry or upset; or at least lessen these feelings to some extent.

Tax issues
If you’re self-employed or own a business, navigating the tricky minefield of tax can be tricky. When employed by a company, your tax is automatically deducted by your employer; leaving you without the worry of working out your required contribution. However those who own a business or are self-employed are required to file a tax return each year. This is a time-consuming, confusing process; one which you’re unlikely to understand fully without the help of a solicitor. Tax solicitors know everything there is to know about income, inheritance and capital gains tax, so seeking their advice is a great idea… especially if you wish to avoid a nasty dispute with HM Revenue & Customs.

There are many reasons why one may wish to procure advice from a solicitor; these form just the tip of the iceberg. However the important thing to remember is that it’s more likely to be beneficial than not, so don’t be scared. Get the help you need; you won’t regret it.
