There is a widely popular misconception that driving at night is less dangerous than during day and it is less likely to cause car accidents. Many drivers choose to exceed the speed limit when driving at night, as there are seemingly less cars on the road and therefore less chance for a car accident to occur.
The reality is that as much as a quarter of all car accident occurs in the ‘night hours’. This suggests that extra care should be taken, when driving at night. To begin with, the vision of a driver is severely limited at night and therefore the advantage of colour and contrast perception, which is available during day time, is lost. A further worry for night-drivers is tiredness and sleepiness, which can contribute to the risks of causing a car accident.
If you know in advance that you will have to drive at night, prepare yourself and the car for it. Make sure you have checked your headlights, tail lights, signal lights and windows- see if they are clean and in working order. Use main beam when you can, yet avoid doing so if there is someone ahead of you, who could be dazzled. If you yourself are dazzled, pull over and wait until you feel better. And most importantly- never exceed the speed limit.
