The lighter side of divorce: Top 10 strangest divorce stories

Divorce is the all too common end to many marriages across the world, and when couples take that decision to split the effects can be widespread and devastating for all concerned.

However, in some cases, the actions of the couple or the reasons for the split suggest that divorce might be the best outcome for all concerned.

Here is a look at ten of the strangest reasons for divorce reported in the press over recent years

1. Prison homecoming turned sour

A woman from China divorced her husband shortly after he was released from prison, reports Orange News. She had stuck by him throughout his five year prison sentence, but once he was back home she found that he was always in the way and was overly critical. 2. And mother came too…

Most people would agree that it is a positive thing for a man to have a good relationship with his mother, but for one newly married woman in Italy, her husband’s bond with his mother went a bit too far, reports the Daily Mail. The man’s ‘excessive emotional attachment’ to his mother had already caused problems in the couple’s relationship, but the last straw came when the bride discovered her groom was bringing his mother along on their honeymoon…

3. From the mouths of birds

A Chinese woman had her suspicions about her husband’s infidelity confirmed when she came back from a month long trip to find that the couple’s pet mynah bird had learnt some new words in her absence, such as ‘divorce’, ‘be patient’ and ‘I love you’, reports CNN. She filed for divorce soon after.

4. Cats 550, husband nil

An Israeli man sought a divorce from his wife after she adopted 550 cats, reports the Times of Israel. Attempts by the local court to reconcile the couple were unsuccessful, after the woman decided she would rather keep the cats than her husband.

5. 50 shades of unreasonable behaviour

A married woman was inspired to spice up her love life with her husband after reading the erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey, reports the Daily Mail. He refused to go along with her suggestions however, so she filed for divorce. A 99-year-old Italian man sued his 96-year-old wife for divorce after discovering that she had been unfaithful to him during the 1940s, reports the Telegraph. 7. Face off

The marriage of a Saudi Arabian couple ran into difficulties after the husband tried to see his wife’s face, reports the Daily Mail. The wife followed a very old and unusual Saudi custom that requires her to be veiled at all times and she sought a divorce when, after 30 years of marriage, her husband tried to sneak a peek while she was asleep.

8. What’s your relationship status?

A woman tried to divorce her new husband after he failed to change his Facebook status to ‘married’, reports the Huffington Post. The husband claimed he had simply forgotten to do so, as they had only been married for two months, but his wife wasn’t convinced. 10. Never lie about your age

A Chinese couple’s ten-year-marriage came to an abrupt end after the husband found out his wife had lied to him about her age, reports the China Daily. Before they got married she had told him she was 24, when in fact she was actually aged 30.
