Thinking about a Divorce? our Family Law Solicitor offers some advice

Christmas can be a wonderful time for families; a time to cherish with loved ones. However Christmas can also be one to remember for all the wrong reasons.

There is so much pressure on families to be happy over the festive period; couples want everything to be perfect at Christmas and some do not anticipate the extent to which this can take its toll upon relationships.

Often couples try to stay together at Christmas for the sake of their Children, despite the fact that they cannot bear to be together any longer. This creates a household full of tension and unhappiness on what is supposed to be a happy time. The ever increasing costs of Christmas with the organisation of presents and food all add to the stresses and strains already apparent in relationships. The family coming to stay often doesn’t help either and by the end of the “Happy Holidays”, people are climbing the walls and totally fed up with each other.

Today, 3rd January has been named “D Day” as Lawyers across the country are expected to be inundated with calls from new clients seeking to get the Divorce ball rolling after their marriages have fractured over the holiday period.

As well as an increase in the Divorce enquiries I have received today, I was also approached by new clients over the Christmas period itself. One client informed me that her husband had walked out on her completely out of the blue on Christmas Day and another client informed me that he wished to instruct me in the New Year, once the festive period had come to an end as he had come to the end of the road but didn’t want to ruin Christmas by taking any action before December.

In the event that you have reached the decision that your marriage has irretrievably broken down, then it is imperative that you seek independent legal advice at the earliest opportunity.

At Slater and Gordon Lawyers, we offer tailored Fixed Fee products in relation to both legally ending the marriage; obtaining a final certificate of Divorce (called the Decree Absolute) and the obtaining of a legally binding Court Order setting out the financial settlement reached upon Divorce. As members of Resolution, we are committed to the constructive resolution of family disputes and promote a non-confrontational approach to family problems.
